Hamburg U-Bahn opening hours
The metro runs from about 04:00 to 01:00, and right through the night on the nights from Friday to Saturday, Saturday to Sunday and before public holidays as a 24-hour night service. Here are all the intervals, line by line.
Opening hours: when does the U-Bahn run in Hamburg?
On the nights from Friday to Saturday, from Saturday to Sunday and on the nights before public holidays the Hamburg U-Bahn runs non-stop — about every 20 minutes, on all four lines. On every other night there is no metro between roughly 01:00 and 04:00; the night buses take over instead.
How often does the Hamburg metro run?
The Hamburg U-Bahn has no minute-by-minute departure timetable: it runs at intervals. So there is nothing to look up — you walk down to the platform and the next train comes. How long you wait depends only on the time of day.
Opening hours line by line
The exact first and last departure depends on the station: trains set off from the termini at about 04:00, so they reach the city center a few minutes later. The last trains leave the termini at around 01:00 — except on the nights with 24-hour service.
Night service and the night buses
Fri/Sat, Sat/Sun and before public holidays
On those nights all four U-Bahn lines run right through, about every 20 minutes. You need no special ticket: the normal HVV fare applies.
On every other night
From Sunday to Thursday the U-Bahn rests between about 01:00 and 04:00. The night buses then run along the main corridors — and they are included in your normal ticket too.
Filling in the network
MetroBus, XpressBus, the S-Bahn and the HADAG harbor ferries keep their own hours and some start earlier than the metro. You can change between U-Bahn, S-Bahn, bus and ferry on the same ticket.
Partial closures possible
Hamburger Hochbahn mainly uses weekends and the summer months for track and points work. Individual sections are then closed and served by replacement buses. Current alerts are on hvv.de.

Engineering works, a big event (a match at the Volksparkstadion, say) or an incident can change the service at short notice. Take a look at the current service status before you set off — especially at weekends, when partial closures are common.
