The U4 line at a glance
The U4 of the Hamburg U-Bahn links Billstedt with Elbbrücken — 12 stations over 13.3 kilometres, in about 18 minutes. It first opened in 29 November 2012 (the newest line).
The U4 is the youngest line on the network: it went into service on November 29, 2012 and serves above all the new HafenCity. From Billstedt it runs along the shared inner-city section with the U2 to Jungfernstieg, where it branches off to its own stations Überseequartier, HafenCity Universität and — since 2018 — Elbbrücken right on the Elbe. Only three of its twelve stops are U4-only stations; all the rest it shares with the U2. As the most modern line, the U4 is also the only one that is fully step-free. It is above all the line of a young, growing Hamburg on the water.

The U4 keeps growing: beyond today’s route it is currently being extended from Horner Rennbahn toward the Horner Geest, with the planned stations Stoltenstraße and Horner Geest. Opening is slated for around 2027 — until then this section is still under construction. As the youngest line, the U4 is also the only one whose stations have all been step-free from the start.

Like the rest of the network, the U-Bahn runs from about 04:00 to 01:00. On Friday and Saturday nights, and before public holidays, the U4 also runs around the clock, every 20 minutes. See the timetable.
