The U2 line at a glance
The U2 of the Hamburg U-Bahn links Niendorf Nord with Mümmelmannsberg — 25 stations over 24.5 kilometres, in about 40 minutes. It first opened in 1913 (Eimsbüttel); the line in its present form dates from the 1970s.
The U2 connects Niendorf Nord in the north-west with Mümmelmannsberg in the east and runs almost entirely underground — it is the network’s classic tunnel line. On the inner-city section between Jungfernstieg and Billstedt it shares the tracks with the U4, so service here is especially frequent. In the west it serves Hagenbecks Tierpark, one of Hamburg’s most popular attractions. Around Osterstraße in the Eimsbüttel district lies the oldest section of the entire Hamburg U-Bahn, which went into service back in 1913. The history of the U2 thus reaches further back than its modern, wholly underground character might at first suggest.

Between Jungfernstieg and Billstedt the U2 and U4 run together across nine stops — on this inner-city section the two lines combine into an especially tight timetable. Historically the U2 is nonetheless one of the city’s oldest links: the section around Osterstraße in Eimsbüttel belongs to the original network of 1913. Hagenbecks Tierpark on the route is one of the best-known zoos in Europe.
