The U1 line at a glance
The U1 of the Hamburg U-Bahn links Norderstedt Mitte with Ohlstedt — 47 stations over 55.4 kilometres, in about 63 minutes. It first opened in 1914 (Kellinghusenstraße–Ohlsdorf section).
At around 55 kilometers and 47 stations, the U1 is the longest underground line in Germany. It links Norderstedt Mitte in the north with its two branches out to Großhansdorf and Ohlstedt in the north-east, and it is the only Hamburg line that leaves the city and reaches far into the state of Schleswig-Holstein. At Volksdorf it splits into its two end branches — this stretch goes back to the old Walddörferbahn. As the classic north–south and north-east axis it crosses half the city on the way: from Langenhorn and Fuhlsbüttel via Kellinghusenstraße and Stephansplatz to Jungfernstieg, on to Hauptbahnhof Süd and out to Wandsbek. For many riders coming in from the surrounding towns it is the daily link into the city center.

At Volksdorf the two branches of the U1 divide: trains run alternately to Großhansdorf and to Ohlstedt, and both terminals already lie in Schleswig-Holstein. That makes the U1 the only line on which you leave Hamburg by U-Bahn. The north-eastern stretch runs through the leafy Walddörfer and is operated above ground — unlike the underground section in the city center.
