Deutschland-Ticket & season tickets — the de-facto monthly pass
The real monthly ticket today is called the Deutschland-Ticket. For €63.00 a month it takes you across the whole country on all local and regional transport — U-Bahn, S-Bahn, bus, regional trains — so far beyond Hamburg. It is a subscription you can cancel monthly, and for almost every regular rider it is cheaper than the classic HVV monthly ticket (€83.00).
For single days the all-day ticket AB (€8.20, in the app €7.63) is the simplest choice; for a whole week-long stay the weekly ticket (€43.00). If you travel regularly, the Deutschland-Ticket is the cheapest way to get around — it replaces the classic monthly ticket for most people.
Is the Hamburg CARD worth it?
The Hamburg CARD is not a standard HVV ticket but the city’s tourist card: it includes free travel by bus and train in the AB fare zone plus reductions at many museums, tours and restaurants. It also comes as a group card and for several days; the current prices are on hamburg.de. It only pays off if you actually use the discounts — if all you want is to get around, the all-day ticket AB (€8.20) or the weekly ticket (€43.00) is usually cheaper.

No. Hamburg has no validators and no fare gates. Your ticket is valid from the printed or chosen start time — you simply buy it before you board. Checks happen on the train; without a valid ticket you pay €60.00.
