The U3 line at a glance
The U3 of the Hamburg U-Bahn links Wandsbek-Gartenstadt with Dehnhaide — 25 stations over 20.7 kilometres, in about 50 minutes. It first opened in 15 February 1912 (the oldest line).
The U3 is the oldest line of the Hamburg U-Bahn: it opened on February 15, 1912 as a ring line and still circles the inner city today. It is also the most scenic route — between Baumwall and Landungsbrücken it runs above ground on an elevated viaduct along the harbor, with sweeping views over the Elbe and the Elbphilharmonie. Along the way it passes St. Pauli with the Reeperbahn and the striking bunker on Feldstraße. Operationally it is a ring with a spur out to Wandsbek-Gartenstadt; Barmbek forms the ring junction and is served twice per loop. For visitors, the U3 is the finest way to discover Hamburg from the train window.

No other stretch of the Hamburg U-Bahn is as beloved as the elevated line between Baumwall and Landungsbrücken: here the U3 leaves the tunnel and runs high above the harbor, with views of the Elbe, the Landungsbrücken piers and the Elbphilharmonie. If you want to visit the Reeperbahn, get off at St. Pauli; the huge bunker on Feldstraße sits right by the neighboring station. Barmbek is the junction of the ring.
